Stories from the Land of the Golden River

  • Summary

  • This is a podcast produced by the inaugural UTSC Library Sophia Hilton Storytelling Fellowship recipients, in collaboration with the Library’s DSU and Emerging Professionals Program. The Fellowship gave three students the opportunity to be mentored by Anthropologist Dr. Brenda Beck for 8 months to immerse in the art and practice of storytelling. The series is focused on the rich Tamil epic, "The Legend of Ponnivala", which is available in the UTSC Library’s Tamil Digital Collections. We decided to produce this podcast to perform these stories and discuss their relationship to current themes.

In episode six we explore the significance settings in the epic, in some cases we saw it in the eyes of symbolism, in some cases we saw it as key tools to getting a better understanding of the story and a tool used to carry the flow of the plot. As Christy mentioned in the start, settings can be seen as significant as the central characters of the story.
