  • Summary

  • Ravana tries various methods to entice Sita. He even appears as her father, Janaka, to persuade her, but she sees through his disguise. Sita initially suspects Hanuman too, is Ravan in disguise, but he hands her the choodamani or hair pin she threw down from the pushpakavimaana when Ravana abducted her. Nevertheless, Sita refuses to be rescued by Hanuman, saying Rama must come for her. There are various stories regarding Indrajit's origins. Hanuman creates havoc in Ravana's palace garden and kills many Asuras, including Ravana's son Akshaya Kumara. It is Indrajit who finally captures Hanuman, using the Brahmastra. Hanuman burns Lanka when Ravana orders his tail to be set on fire. Hanuman then returns to Mahendragiri, and the Vanaras, ecstatic at his return, raid Sugriva's royal vineyard. In an inebriated state, they kill the keeper of the vines. Thus, Hanuman's karma of destroying Ravana's garden follows him. Rama too, threatens the Sea God Varuna, and forces him to allow the stones to float, creating a bridge to Lanka. In his Krishna avatar, Rama faces the karmaphala of this action.
