A young woman and her husband, John, a respected physician, spend a summer at a colonial mansion. John imposes a 'rest cure' on his wife when she suffers a 'nervous depression' following the birth of their child. The woman is largely confined to the nursery upstairs where she gradually gets lost in the sickly yellow wallpaper.

The utopian novel Herland describes an isolated society composed entirely of women, with an ideal social order free of war, conflict, and domination.
