Constable Paul Hirschhausen runs a one-cop station in the dry farming country south of the Flinders Ranges. Now Christmas is here and, apart from a grass fire, two boys stealing a vehicle and Brenda Flann entering the front bar of the pub without exiting her car, Hirsch's life has been peaceful. Until he's called to an incident on Kitchener Street, a strange and vicious attack that sickens the community.

Winter in Tiverton, and Constable Paul Hirschhausen has a snowdropper on his patch. Someone is stealing women's underwear, and Hirsch knows how that kind of crime can escalate. Then two calls come in: a child abandoned in a caravan, filthy and starving. And a man on the rampage at the primary school. Hirsch knows how things like that can escalate, too. An absent father who isn't where he's supposed to be; another who flees to the back country armed with a rifle. Families under pressure can break. But it's always a surprise when the killing starts.

Die Dezemberhitze brennt auf die trockenen Felder und den flimmernden Asphalt im australischen Tiverton. Constable Paul Hirschhausen leitet die Polizeistation der Kleinstadt im staubigen Niemandsland. Bagatelldiebstähle, Trunkenheit am Steuer - Hirsch hat nicht allzu viel zu tun. Bis ein Pferdemassaker die Anwohner erschüttert und dem Constable Rätsel aufwirft. Die Medien wittern eine Story und fallen in Tiverton ein. Hirsch muss die Gemüter beruhigen, doch als auch noch eine Leiche gefunden wird, überschlagen sich die Ereignisse.

Jahrhundert - von den Nazis während des Zweiten Weltkriegs erbeutet - sei im Erholungsort Noosa, in der sengenden Hitze der Sunshine Coast im Haus eines Pädophilen aufgetaucht und eine israelische Auftraggeberin biete viel Geld dafür.

Nach kurzer Liaison mit der Polizistin Liz Redding will Wyatt schnellstens untertauchen. Doch er trifft seinen Neffen Raymond wieder, der ihm den Raub einer Kunstsammlung schmackhaft machen kann. Doch Wyatt ahnt nicht, dass sein Neffe auch andere Deals am Laufen hat. In der Meerenge vor Tasmanien will er mit zwielichtigen Abenteurern eine versunkene Barke voll spanischer Goldmünzen bergen und nebenbei auch noch einen Klienten seines Anwalts aus der Untersuchungshaft befreien.

Tivertons sirrend heißer Sommer, der müde Steinmauern zermalmt und träge Windräder unter seiner Hitze in die Knie zwingt, wird von einem kalt grünen Winter abgelöst. Unentwegt fährt Constable Hirschhausen über die einsamen Landstraßen, um nach dem Rechten zu sehen.

Im Zeitalter des Internets und der elektronischen Überwachungsanlagen ist Wyatt kaum noch konkurrenzfähig. Er muss die Ansprüche zurückschrauben und sich mit Klein-Klein begnügen. Ein Juwelenjob erscheint da ganz nach seinem Geschmack - nichts Extravagantes, nichts Undurchschaubares, bis auf die Tatsache, dass es Eddie Oberins Job ist und nicht nur Oberin darauf besteht, bei dem Überfall mitzumischen, sondern auch seine Exfrau Lydia Stark, von der das Insiderwissen stammt. Wyatt arbeitet lieber allein, gibt aber grünes Licht, denn sein Plan ist wie immer akribisch vorbereitet.

Ein jahrealtes Skelett, ein ungeklärter Mordfall und vergessene Geheimnisse - ein Fall für Sergeant Alan Auhl. Im Garten der Wrights auf der Blackberry Hill Farm gleitet eine Schlange über den verdorrten Rasen und unter eine verwitterte Betonplatte. Die aufgeschreckte Familie lässt den Schlangenfänger kommen, doch der buddelt etwas ganz anderes aus: Unter der Platte kommt ein Skelett zum Vorschein. Ein Fall für die Abteilung für ungelöste Verbrechen, in der Sergeant Alan Auhl verstaubte Cold Cases bearbeitet.

In der Nähe von Tiverton, einer Kleinstadt in Australiens Nirgendwo, wird ein Mädchen tot am Straßenrand gefunden. Constable Paul Hirschhausen, genannt Hirsch, übernimmt den Fall. Er glaubt nicht an einen Unfall mit Fahrerflucht.

Her colleagues are thinking bad family, truancy. Her boss is thinking about the media.
