The Bhagavata is the story of Krishna, known as Shyam to those who find beauty, wisdom, and love in his dark complexion. It is the third great Hindu epic after the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. However, this narration was composed in fragments over thousands of years, first as the Harivamsa, then as the Bhagavata Purana, and finally as the passionate songs of poet-sages in various regional languages.

કૃષ્ણને કોઈ ચોક્કસ આકૃતિમાં જોવા એ તો આપણા ચર્મચક્ષુઓની મર્યાદાનું પરિણામ છે. વાસ્તવમાં કૃષ્ણ એ એક નિતાંત ભાવના છે. ભાવનાનો આકાર ન હોય - માત્ર અનુભૂતિ હોય! માનવીના અંતઃસ્તલમાં કશુંક અમૂર્ત પામવાની જે અવિરત ઝંખના રહેલી છે એ જ તો કૃષ્ણ દર્શન છે. આ દર્શન પ્રાપ્ત થતું નથી અને અતૃપ્તિનો ઓડકાર માણસને વ્યગ્ર કરી મૂકે છે. તત્કાલીન આર્યાવર્તના પરમ પુરુષ શ્રીકૃષ્ણને પણ એમના આપ્તજનોએ કેવો અન્યાય ર્ક્યો હતો એનું આલેખન કરતી આ નવલકથા સહ્રદય ભાવકના અસ્તિત્વમાં ખળભળાટ પેદા કરી મૂકે છે. આ નવલકથા 'ગુજરાત સમાચાર' રવિવારની સાપ્તાહિક પૂર્તિમાં હપ્તાવાર પ્રસિદ્ધ થઈ હતી.
