Era già stato pubblicato a puntate dal 1875, ma non fu mai pubblicata l'ottava parte perché la rivista non tollerò le prese d posizione antinazionaliste di Tolstoj, che fu quindi costretto a pubblicare l'opera completa a sue spese.Tolstoj vedeva in questo libro, considerato un capolavoro del realismo, il suo primo vero romanzo.
