Le Comte de Monte-Cristo is an adventure novel and one of the author's most popular works. He completed the work in 1844. The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and in the Levant during the historical events of 1815-1838 (from just before the Hundred Days to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). It deals with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness. The book is considered a literary classic today.

Il cardinale Richelieu è morto nel 1642 ed è stato sostituito dal cardinale italiano Giulio Mazzarino, “odiato” da gran parte del popolo e che ha sposato in segreto Anna d'Austria, in morganatico. Anche il re Luigi XIII è morto, lasciando Luigi XIV, il Re Sole, ancora bambino, sotto la reggenza della madre Anna d'Austria. A Parigi, inoltre, dopo l'ennesimo aumento delle tasse da parte di Mazzarin scoppia la Fronda, che porta scompiglio nella città e preoccupa il cardinale.

Der Graf von Monte Christo – Band 2 ist ein Abenteuerroman von Alexandre Dumas dem Älteren. Zwischen 1844 und 1846 veröffentlichte Dumas den Graf von Monte Christo als Fortsetzungsroman in der Zeitschrift Le Journal des débats und erzielte damit ungeahnten Erfolg.
