Professor Timofey Pnin ist ein Ritter der traurigen Gestalt. Der Exilrusse lehrt Literatur an einem amerikanischen Provinzcollege und versucht, sich in der neuen Heimat zurechtzufinden. Weder versteht er die Feinheiten der englischen Sprache, noch ist er in der Lage, die gesellschaftlichen Codes des American Way of Life zu entschlüsseln. Überängstlich und zwanghaft, in seiner Tapsigkeit dabei anrührend, taumelt Pnin von einem Missgeschick zum nächsten. Doch trotz aller Demütigungen, die er sich nicht zuletzt selbst beifügt, schafft er es, seine Würde durch alle Widernisse zu retten.

The Gift is the last of the novels Nabokov wrote in his native language and the crowning achievement of that period in his literary career. It is also his ode to Russian literature, evoking the works of Pushkin, Gogol, and others in the course of its narrative: the story of Fyodor Godunov-Cherdyntsev, an impoverished émigré poet living in Berlin, who dreams of the book he will someday write - a book very much like The Gift itself.

One of the twentieth century’s master prose stylists, Vladimir Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg in 1899.

Auf einer Geschäftsreise nach Prag glaubt der windige Schokoladenfabrikant Hermann Karlowitsch im Landstreicher Felix seinen Doppelgänger zu erkennen, und ein genialer Plan reift in ihm heran: Er wird den jungen Mann töten und so den eigenen Tod vortäuschen, um das Geld aus der Lebensversicherung einzustreichen. In seiner grenzenlosen Selbstüberschätzung prahlt der Erzähler, Möchtegern-Autor und Meisterverbrecher jedoch mit seiner Genialität und gerät dadurch bald in arge Bedrängnis.

These masterly poems span the whole of Nabokov's career from "Music", written in 1914, to the short, playful "To Vera", composed in 1974. The works are newly translated by Dmitiri Nabokov, and include "The University Poem", an extraordinary autobiographical poem in which Nabokov recalls his life in Cambridge, with its crooked alleys and age-old gates, teas at the vicar's and British girls. Included to are such poems as "To Russia" ("Will you leave me alone! I implore you!), the enchanting "Eve", and verse about America, sport, love, and poetry itself.

In a Berlin rooming house filled with an assortment of serio-comic Russian émigrés, Lev Ganin, a vigorous young officer poised between his past and his future, relives his first love affair. His memories of Mary are suffused with the freshness of youth and the idyllic ambience of pre-revolutionary Russia. In stark contrast is the decidedly unappealing boarder living in the room next to Ganin’s, who, he discovers, is Mary’s husband....

Glory is the wryly ironic story of Martin Edelweiss, a 22-year-old Russian émigré of no account, who is in love with a girl who refuses to marry him. Convinced that his life is about to be wasted and hoping to impress his love, he decides to embark upon a “perilous, daredevil project” — an illegal attempt to reenter the Soviet Union, from which he and his mother had fled in 1919. He succeeds — but at a terrible cost.

The Enchanter is the Ur-Lolita, the precursor to Nabokov’s classic novel. At once hilarious and chilling, it tells the story of an outwardly respectable man and his fatal obsession with certain pubescent girls, whose coltish grace and subconscious coquetry reveal, to his mind, a special bud on the verge of bloom.

Berlin, Zwanzigerjahre: Franz, ein junger Mann aus der Provinz, reist in die Hauptstadt, um im Warenhaus seines reichen Onkels Dreyer zu arbeiten. Doch schon bald hat er nur noch Augen für dessen Frau Martha, die nichts gegen diese jugendliche Schwärmerei einzuwenden hat. Bald träumen sie von einer gemeinsamen Zukunft und entwickeln einen Plan, um Dreyer aus dem Weg zu räumen.

Albinus, un respetable crítico de arte, conoce a Margot, mucho más joven que él. Albinus queda prendado y abandona a su esposa y a su hija para fugarse con ella. Pero entonces irrumpe Axel Rex, un joven y cínico artista, examante de Margot. Se completa así el último vértice de un triángulo amoroso de fatales consecuencias. Tras sufrir un accidente que lo deja ciego, Albinus se retira a una casa aislada con Margot. Pero lo que no sabe es que allí se instala también Axel, que hace el amor con Margot y se pasea retadoramente desnudo ante Albinus, que oye pasos e intuye que algo extraño está sucediendo.

Der Zufall will es, dass sich Viktor und die schöne Nina über fünfzehn Jahre lang an den verschiedensten Orten der Welt immer wieder begegnen: in Moskau, in Berlin und nun in Fialta auf der Krim. Nina ist für Viktor, der seine Familie zu Hause gelassen hat, die große Liebe. Doch auch Nina ist verheiratet, mit einem französisch-ungarischen Schriftsteller, der zu Viktors Missvergnügen ebenfalls in Fialta ist. Schon in diesem Frühwerk, gelesen von Dietmar Mues, scheinen Nabokovs Witz und sein scharfer Verstand durch, die ihn später mit "Lolita" zu einem Star der Weltliteratur machen sollten.
