The classic tale of the uncanny and supernatural by W.W. Jacobs. Whilst serving in India, the Sergeant-Major acquired the mummified paw of a monkey - that had had a spell put on it by an old fakir who, "wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives, and those that interfered with it did so to their sorrow."

William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author of short stories and novels, well known for his comedies involving rural Essex characters. His most famous story, "The Monkey's Paw" (1902) is a tale of intense psychological horror. "The Old Man of the Sea" is a farcical comedy about a young man, George Wright, who tries to win a lady’s hand by pretending to be the only heir of a rich uncle.

The paw of a dead monkey is a talisman that grants its possessor three wishes, but the wishes come with an enormous price.

The Monkey's Paw is the classic American tale that warns listeners to be careful what they wish for. Both a tale of magic and of horror, a family is thrown in shambles after they receive a mysterious gift: a monkey's paw that can grant the user three wishes. However, their greed overcomes them, and they soon learn that what you wish for is not always what you wanted.

W. W. Jacobs was best known for his humorous tales of sailors, often related by his most popular and enduring character: The night-watchman on the wharf in Wapping, recounting the preposterous adventures of his acquaintances Ginger Dick, Sam Small, and Peter Russet. These three characters, pockets full after a long voyage, would take lodgings together determined to enjoy a long spell ashore; but the crafty inhabitants of dockland London would soon relieve them of their funds, assisted by the sailors' own fecklessness and credulity.

At the deathbed of Ursula, the eldest of three sisters, the dying women declares that she will return from the dead when the time comes to accompany each of her younger siblings into the afterlife. The two survivors and their old housekeeper, now live on in fear of encountering Ursula's ghost, and strange happenings in the house bring this terror to an unholy climax.

When a mutinous spirit breaks out among the crew of the schooner, the Captain and Mate cannot comprehend the cause. As the sailors one by one refuse to eat the rotting food the Skipper has supplied, he decides to make an example of the cabin boy. The crew come up with an ingenious plan to change the Skipper's mind and release the stocks of fresh meat and butter. They decide to fake the death by suicide of the cabin boy... but things do not turn out quite as they had hoped.

It tells the story of a man whose murdered enemy lies secretly buried at the bottom of the garden. It is the perfect crime. Nobody need ever know who has murdered him and where he lies. Nobody need ever have known....

A jealous sailor husband, a pretty but bored young wife and a grey parrot with a masterly command of bad language and an attitude to match. The perfect ingredients for a slapstick comedy from th master of humorous writing.
