Leo Tolstoy (1828 - 1910) was a Russian writer who is regarded as among the greatest authors of all time. Translated by R S Townsend and published in 1916, the seven stories in Tolstoy for the Young have been adapted for children, to serve as the perfect introduction to the great writer for young listeners.

"A Confession" is an 1880 autobiographical essay on the subject of despair, philosophy, and religion by the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. In it, he describes his search for answers to questions on the meaning of life. Tolstoy discusses his various attempts to find answers in science, philosophy, Eastern wisdom, and the opinions of his fellow novelists. Recognizing the deep religious convictions of ordinary people as a source of answers, he challenges the authenticity of organized religion.

In the course of this essay, Tolstoy attempts to find answers to the greatest questions of philosophy through science, philosophy, eastern wisdom, and the opinions of his fellow novelists. Finding no workable solution in any of these, Tolstoy recognizes the deep religious convictions of ordinary people as containing the key to true answers. The first attempt at its publication took place in 1882, but Tolstoy's work was removed from the journal by the Orthodox Church. The text was later published in Geneva in 1884 and in Russia as late as 1906.

In the winter of 1854 Tolstoy, then an officer in the Russian army, arranged to be transferred to the besieged town of Sebastopol. Wishing to see at first hand the action of what would become known as the Crimean War, he was spurred on by a fierce patriotism, but also by an equally fierce desire to alert the authorities to appalling conditions in the army. The three Sebastopol Sketches - 'December', 'May' and 'August' - re-create what happened during different phases of the siege and its effect on the ordinary men around him.

God Sees the Truth, But Waits is a short story by Russian author Leo Tolstoy first published in 1872. The story, about a man sent to prison for a murder he did not commit, takes the form of a parable of forgiveness. English translations were also published under titles "The Confessed Crime", "Exiled to Siberia", and "The Long Exile". A Letter to a Hindu (also known as "A Letter to a Hindoo") was a letter written by Leo Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das on 14 December 1908. The letter was written in response to two letters sent by Das, seeking support from the Russian author and thinker for India's independence from colonial rule. In A Letter to a Hindu, Tolstoy argued that only through the principle of love could the Indian people gain independence from colonial rule.

War and Peace – Tolstoy's epic masterpiece intertwines the lives of private and public individuals during the time of the Napoleonic wars and the French invasion of Russia. Anna Karenina – The heroine of Tolstoy's epic of love and self-destruction, Anna Karenina has beauty, wealth, popularity and an adored son, but feels that her life is empty until she encounters the impetuous officer Count Vronsky. Resurrection – It tells the story of a nobleman's attempt to redeem the suffering his youthful philandering inflicted on a peasant girl who ends up a prisoner in Siberia.

The novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy was published in 1886 and is considered a masterpiece of his late-period fiction. It tells the story of a high-court judge in 19th-century Russia. God Sees the Truth, but Waits (1872) is the story of a man falsely convicted and imprisoned in Siberia for a murder he did not commit. Tolstoy explores themes of forgiveness, faith, and guilt in this narrative, which inspired a novella by Stephen King and the film The Shawshank Redemption.

Arguably the greatest literary masterpiece, War and Peace is an amazing blend of philosophy, history, spirituality, and love told through two families, the Rostovs and the Bolkonskys. The Rostovs personify the Russian spirit. Count Rostov, a generous, kind spendthrift, can deny his family nothing. His countess is a warm, loving, overindulged woman. These characteristics are reflected in their children, while the austere Bolkonskys are duty-bound.

For an atheist it’s a great deal, though it does suggest atheism may have a weak point. For those of faith it’s a matter of jam now and purgatory tomorrow. A bargain many artists feel is something they can live with. For agnostics it’s usually a question of can the afterlife really be that bad, would workplace regulations reach all parts of heaven and hell. However, in this volume the terms are agreed and the Devil pays his fees and the character his dues, each happy to wait a few decades for the eternal payback.
