The Viy is a horror novella by Russian writer Nikolai Gogol, first published in the first volume of his collection of tales entitled Mirgorod (1835). The title is also the name of the demonic entity central to the plot. Every summer, there is usually a large procession of all the students moving around the area as they travel home. However, the group is reduced to three students: the theologian Khaliava, the philosopher Khoma Brut, and the rhetorician Tibery Gorobets. As the night draws in, the students hope to find a village near the main road where they can find some rest and food.

Der junge und talentierte aber erfolglose Maler Andrej Petrowitsch Tschartkow erwirbt in einer kleinen Kunsthandlung das Porträt eines alten Mannes für einen Spottpreis. Besonders die ausdrucksstarke Malweise der Augen des Porträts zieht in magisch an. Die tragikomische Novelle von 1842 beschreibt das einsame Leben des Akakij Akakijewitsch in Sankt Petersburg. Er ist Beamter mit Leib und Seele, der seinen Beruf als Kopist liebt. Den Spott seiner Kollegen ignoriert er, am gesellschaftlichen Leben nimmt er kaum teil. Erst, als er sich einen Mantel kauft, den er sich lange Zeit vom Munde abgespart hat, ändert sich sein Leben schlagartig. Er wird nun von seiner Umwelt wahrgenommen, und seine Kollegen veranstalten sogar ein kleines Fest für ihn und den Mantel. Dann jedoch wird er überfallen und der neue Mantel wird ihm gestohlen.

Das Haus war nicht hoch, nach dem äußeren eine gewöhnliche Kosakenhütte mit einer Stube. Doch ist darin Platz für ihn und die Frau, für die alte Dienerin und zehn auserlesenen Burschen.

Der letzte Tag vor Weihnachten war zu Ende. Eine klare Winternacht brach an; die Sterne erstrahlten am Himmel; der Mond erhob sich majestätisch, um den guten Menschen und der ganzen Welt zu leuchten, damit jeder recht lustig die Koljadalieder singe und den Heiland preise.

An einer Ministerialabteilung... ich will die Ministerialabteilung nicht genauer bezeichnen. Es gibt nichts Unangenehmeres, als mit Angehörigen einer Ministerialabteilung, eines Regiments, einer Kanzlei, kurz, mit irgendeiner Amtsperson zu tun zu haben. Jeder Privatmensch glaubt heutzutage, man wolle in seiner Person die ganze Korporation beleidigen. An "einer Ministerialabteilung" war also "ein Beamter" angestellt.
