Basque Memoir

Dominique Laxalt was 16 when he left the French Pyrenees for America. He became a sheepherder in the Nevada desert and nearby hills of the Sierra. Like all his fellow Basque immigrants, Dominique dreamed of someday returning to the land of his beginnings. Most Basques never made the journey back, but Dominique finally did return for a visit with family and friends. Sweet Promised Land is the story of that trip, told by his son Robert, who accompanied him to the pastoral mountain village of Tardets in France.

True crime -sarja uskomattomista vankilapaoista. Tammikuun 6. 1960 kolme vankia pakeni pahamaineisesta Alcatrazin vankilasta. Alcatrazia kutsuttiin nimellä ”The Rock”, sillä pelätty vankila sijaitsi saarella, jota ympäröivät tyrskyisät vedet. Frank Lee Moris ja veljekset John ja Clarence Anglin onnistuivat silti karkaamaan saarelta pienellä lautalla kehittämällä monivaiheisen pakosuunnitelman. Lauttaa tai miehiä ei kuitenkaan nähty enää koskaan – vain paossa käytetty mela löytyi myöhemmin rannikolta.

Catherine et Jean-Pierre ont vécu au cœur de la Soule, l'une des sept provinces du Pays Basque (trois en France, quatre en Espagne), dans un village baptisé Viodos, à côté de la ville de Mauléon, 5000 habitants, connue depuis longtemps pour sa production de sandales, et fameuse naguère pour son équipe de rugby, opiniâtre et courageuse. Ils ne sont jamais sortis de ce petit territoire et il me semble qu'ils y ont été heureux. En tout cas, à leur façon, ils ont été tous les deux de formidables soldats de Mai 68. Catherine était ma maman. Jean-Pierre était mon papa.
