Jej dziadek, szanowany ormiański duchowny z wschodnioanatolijskiego miasta Wan (stąd - pseudonim literacki poetki) w straszliwym 1915 roku przebywał w Istambule wraz z dużą częścią swej rodziny. Wszyscy oni byli naocznymi świadkami czy wręcz ofiarami okrucieństw młodotureckich bojówek.

Sona Van (en realidad: Ter-Hovhannisian) es una famosa poeta y viajera Armenia. Nació en Ereván, Armenia. Su abuelo, un respetado clérigo armenio de la ciudad de Van en Anatolia oriental (de ahí el seudónimo literario del poeta) en el terrible 1915, se quedó en Estambul con una gran parte de su familia. Todos fueron testigos presenciales o incluso víctimas de las atrocidades de las jóvenes milicias turcas.
