Water Sea Spirituality

In July 1973, Bob Tininenko, his wife Linda, and his brother in-law Jim Fisher set sail from Tacoma, Washington, on a 31-foot trimaran, down the West Coast to Costa Rica. The journey was expected to take a matter of weeks, but 10 days into the cruise, the party encountered a freak storm off the coast of Northern California. When gale-force winds and 50-foot waves capsized their boat, the voyage became a nightmare. For 72 days, the trio was lost at sea. Challenged by nature and compromised by a bitter rivalry, their courage and will to live was put to the ultimate test.

Humans are embedded in rhythms and frequencies that determine their lives: Day and night, waking and sleeping, the seasons, the breathing rhythm, the heartbeat frequency and hormonal rhythms that determine our biological clock. Nowadays, some of these rhythms have become confused, and the relationship between tension and relaxation is often no longer correct. Due to our modern world we often do not experience the seasons intensively enough, we often work against the inner bioryhthmic clock e.g. in shift work and have little time for harmonization and energy reflux.

The Gospels are dramatic and incredibly wet, set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Yet we've missed much of this perspective - until now. Leslie Leyland Fields, a seasoned Alaskan fisherwoman, leads us across the waters of time and culture out onto the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament beside the ragtag fishermen disciples.
