Darcia Narvaez (Ph.D., Minnesota, 1993) is Professor Emerita in the Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame (http://www.nd.edu/~dnarvaez/). She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the American Educational Research Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Born in Minnesota (USA), she grew up living around the world as a bilingual/bicultural Puerto Rican-German American but calls Earth her home. Her earlier careers include professional musician, business owner, classroom music teacher, classroom Spanish teacher, and seminarian, among other things. In her academic career, she employs a lifespan, interdisciplinary approach to studying evolved morality, child development and human flourishing, integrating anthropology, neuroscience, clinical, developmental, evolutionary and educational sciences. A recent book, Neurobiology and the Development of Human Morality: Evolution, Culture and Wisdom won the 2015 William James Book Award from the American Psychological Association and the 2017 Expanded Reason Award. She has published various curriculum materials (Nurturing Character in the Classroom, EthEx Series, Books 1-4) and was the leader of the design team for the Minnesota Community Voices and Character Education Project which she reported on at a Whitehouse conference hosted by Laura Bush. Dr. Narvaez’s ongoing research explores how early life experience influences societal culture and moral character in children and adults. She integrates neurobiological, clinical, developmental and education sciences in her theories and research about moral development. She publishes extensively on moral development, parenting and education. Recently she has been studying the Evolved Developmental Niche (Evolved Nest) and how it influences moral development, moral capacities and preferences. She has developed integrative theories such as (1) Integrative Ethical Education, school-based moral character development; (2) Adaptive Ethical Expertise, the development of ethical virtue; and (3) Triune Ethics Meta-Theory, a moral psychology theory that integrates neurobiology, evolutionary and cognitive sciences; (4) the Evolved Developmental Niche (EvolvedNest.org) for optimal child raising; (5) Ethogenetics: the development of morality from an evolutionary relational developmental systems framework. She was executive editor of the Journal of Moral Education.
