John C. Havens is the founding Executive Director of The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems. This program launched the AI Code of Ethics oriented document, Ethically Aligned Design created by over 700 global thought leaders with versions in 2016, 2017 and 2019. This work inspired the creation of the IEEE 7000 standards series, the largest suite of global socio-technical standards focused on AI and ethics to date. EAD and the 7000 series have been used by organizations including the OECD, UNESCO, IBM and the 2023 EU AI Act. John is currently the Director of IEEE’s Planet Positive 2030 Program, where he regularly speaks and writes about sustainability, economics and wellbeing. He is the author of three books available on Amazon: Tactical Transparency, Hacking Happiness and Heartificial Intelligence and has been quoted by or had articles featured in Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, Forbes, The Guardian, USA Today, TechCrunch and Mashable, among others. He was an EVP of Social Media at a top ten PR Firm, has worked in business development and social innovation, and had a non-profit called The Happathon Project focused on increasing human flourishing with technology. John was a professional actor in NYC for over 15 years, with principal roles on Broadway, TV, and film. He plays blues guitar and harmonica, is married to a glorious philosopher and is the proud father of two amazing kids.
