Laura Martínez-Belli was born in Martorell, Barcelona in 1975. She has lived in many countries of Latin America, mostly Mexico where she lived in Mexico City from 1995 to 2016. In 2007 was published her first novel, "In case I don't see you again (Planeta, 2007)," which surprisingly was placed at the top of the best-selling books in Mexico. It was followed by "The chalice thief" (Planeta, 2010), "The two lives of Floria" published in Italy (Salani Editori), Mexico (Planeta), and Spain (Piel de Zapa). With "The Last Page" (Planeta, 2014) she was a finalist for the 2013 Letras Nuevas Prize in Mexico. Martínez-Belli has combined her literary activity with Creative Writing activities at the University of the Cloister of Sor Juana in Mexico and the IE Business School of Madrid. She has written in different print media such as SoHo Magazine, the Univision digital platform, and the Clarin newspaper in Argentina. She was invited to join the Historical Fiction conferences at the National Association of Writers in Education (NAWE) in 2019 edition in York, Great Britain. Since 2016 Martínez-Belli left Mexico City and settled in Madrid where she enjoys life with her husband, two sons, and two jack russell terriers. She is currently writing her next book while she continues teaching workshops on creative writing and literary creation at the Escuela de Escritores. In 2020 she was at the top 10 finalists for the Planeta Prize, the highest literary prize in spanish publications. The Empress is her first book translated into English.
