Mary Chamberlain is a novelist and historian of Britain and the Caribbean. She is the author of the international best seller, 'The Dressmaker of Dachau', first published in 2015 by The Borough Press (HarperCollins) in the United Kingdom and, under the title 'The Dressmaker's War' by Random House in the United States in 2016. It sold to 19 countries, and was a best seller in many of them. Her second novel, 'The Hidden,' published by Oneworld in 2019, was a Sunday Times 'Must Reads' choice of the best recent books. Her latest novel, 'The Forgotten' was published in September 2021 by Oneworld and was also rated by the Sunday Times as one of the best historical fiction releases for that month. Her new novel, 'The Lie' was published in July 2023. An earlier novel, 'The Mighty Jester,' (awarded third place in the 2013 Literature Works 'first page' award) was published by Dr. Cicero Books in the USA in 2014. Her historical works included 'Fenwomen. A portrait of women in an English Village' which was the first book to be published by Virago Press in 1975, and was the basis for Caryl Churchill's award-winning play, Fen. Other critically acclaimed works include 'Old Wives' Tales: the history of remedies, charms and spells,' 'Growing up in Lambeth,' 'Narratives of Exile and Return,' 'Family Love in the Diaspora. Migration and the Anglo-Caribbean experience,' and 'Empire and Nation-building in the Caribbean: Barbados 1937-1966.' She is emeritus professor of Caribbean history at Oxford Brookes University.
