An expert on American government, society, and criminal justice, Mugambi Jouet became a law professor at the University of Southern California (USC) after teaching at Stanford and McGill. He is the author of "Exceptional America: What Divides Americans From the World and From Each Other" (University of California Press, 2017), a comprehensive book on the intriguing relationship between "American exceptionalism" and the intense polarization of modern America over a host of issues, from mass incarceration to wealth inequality, health care reform, abortion, climate change, and beyond. His articles have notably been featured in The New Republic, Slate, Mother Jones, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Huffington Post, The Hill, Libération, Le Nouvel Observateur, and Le Monde, France’s flagship newspaper. He has been interviewed on NPR, C-SPAN, Radio Canada, Radio France, and many other outlets. Raised in Paris by a French mother and Kenyan father, Jouet then lived in the Bible Belt, Manhattan, and beyond. Drawing inspiration from Alexis de Tocqueville and his multicultural background, Jouet explores what distinguishes America from the rest of the world, for better or worse.
