They continued to fight appeals by the Martens to have their convictions overturned. In 2021 the supreme court of North Carolina overturned the convictions and ordered a retrial of the Martens which will take place in 2022. Despite all this Corbett Lynch is keen that the book is a sign of hope that through the greatest of challenges, intense pain and turmoil, love can and will win and the human spirit can survive the greatest of challenges.
