Publisher's Summary
On a hot summer’s day in a poor suburb of Tokyo we meet three women: 30-year-old Natsu, her older sister, Makiko, and Makiko’s teenage daughter, Midoriko. Makiko, an ageing hostess despairing the loss of her looks, has travelled to Tokyo in search of breast-enhancement surgery. She's accompanied by Midoriko, who has recently stopped speaking, finding herself unable to deal with her own changing body and her mother’s self-obsession. Her silence dominates Natsu’s rundown apartment, providing a catalyst for each woman to grapple with their own anxieties and their relationships with one another.
Ten years later, we meet Natsu again. She is now a writer and finds herself on a journey back to her native city, returning to memories of that summer and her family’s past as she faces her own uncertain future.
In Breasts and Eggs Mieko Kawakami paints a radical and intimate portrait of contemporary working-class womanhood in Japan, recounting the heartbreaking journeys of three women in a society where the odds are stacked against them. This is an unforgettable full-length English-language debut from a major new international talent.

A book in the genre of Women's issues is such a refreshing read
This audiobook is actually a collection of two books like a sequel/series. The two stories are set 10 years apart from each other. The first story is about the elder sister who is planning to get breast implants and her issues with her body image while single handedly raising a teen daughter.
The second story on the other hand is about the younger sister who has discovered herself as asexual yet is struggling with the idea of living alone in Tokyo. ashe is looking for ways to conceive a baby with involving a partner which leads her to Sperm donors. The second book is much longer than the first one. It discusses a lot about the pros and cons of having kids by donor sperms.
Though I loved the views expressed in this out of the box fiction story, I wished the second book could have been much shorter.
The first book also had a lot of glimpse of the two sisters from their growing up days, their mother's untimely death and life as single ladies taking care of their lives. The second book however lost the story line in the process of debating about donor sperms. The story somehow was pushed in the last few chapters.

A unique novel exploring womanhood
A well narrated novel that selves into the various contours of a woman’s existence. In a cast of characters mostly composed of women, the novel explores many sensitive themes with great intuitiveness and perception. It’s quite refreshing
