2127: Die HERMES ist jenseits Seite der Sonne von der Kommunikation zur Erde abgeschnitten. Mark Brandis und seine Crew haben Bewohner an Bord der PILGRIM 2000 gefunden. Ihr Rückweg zur Schleuse, an der die HERMES angedockt liegt, ist versperrt.

2130: Mark Brandis leitet als Repräsentant der VEGA den letzten Testflug der INVICTUS, eines neuen Schweren Kreuzers. Mit an Bord ist der renommierte Journalist Martin Seebeck, der einen Reisebericht verfassen soll. Unter dem Kommando des Unions-Majors Jonas Degenhardt ist der Testflug zugleich eine Patrouille, die Piraten aufspüren soll.

2129: Commander Brandis und seine Crew haben zur Jubiläumspräsentation der VEGA Dienst als Ausstellungsführer in San Francisco. Ein ungewöhnlich starkes Erdbeben lässt die San-Andreas-Spalte, auf der die Stadt steht, aufbrechen. Der Hangar stürzt ein, und nur Brandis' Geistesgegenwart verhindert, dass die HERMES zusammen mit dem Rest der VEGA-Raumschiffe vor Ort zerstört wird. Die Stadt geht im Erdbeben unter. In der Nachbesprechung eröffnet Direktor Harris erschreckende Fakten: schon bald werde dieses Unglück durch ein weit größeres abgelöst, wenn kein Wunder geschieht.

2125: Mark Brandis' Schiff, die Hermes, ist mit der nun unbemannten Delta IX im Schlepptau unterwegs zurück zur Erde. Die ermüdende Bordroutine auf dem wochenlangen Flug wird jäh unterbrochen: die Delta IX ist plötzlich spurlos verschwunden.

2127: Commander Brandis und seine Crew sind auf der erdabgewandten Seite der Sonne. Nach Reparaturen an einer Raumstation ist die HERMES bereits auf dem Rückweg, als die Kommunikation ausfällt.
