On March 9, 2014, Neil Moore was in Wandsworth Prison, a maximum security prison in London, England, awaiting trial. Moore, whose modus operandi was fraud, had been charged with orchestrating a series of bank heists – pretending to be a bank official and, via a bit of social engineering, he had managed to convince (real) staffers at other financial institutions to wire him some cash.

A heroin addict – we'll borrow NPR's nomenclature and call him "John" – needs help. Maybe he can't afford the price of a hit. Maybe he's unable to work because he's focused on getting high instead of getting paid.

In the fall of 1994, the United States was introduced to a new tool in the world of crime solving and prosecution – DNA evidence. The O.J. Simpson trial had captured the nation's – if not much of the world's – attention, and a large part of the trial's outcome hung on DNA. At the time, the use of DNA evidence was still emerging, and the science wasn't well understood – or trusted – by juries.

On April 15, 2014, the moon wasn't nearly as bright as the moon typically is, and appeared to take on a reddish color (from Earth, of course) – the result of a lunar eclipse, which occurs when the sun, earth and moon are aligned. The earth blocks most (but not all) of the sunlight that would have otherwise reflected off the moon's surface, leading to a dull, red sphere in the sky.

In 1875, two men from Wisconsin convinced P.T. Barnum, the famed showman, to join their business – a circus. Penicillin was discovered by a scientist named Alexander Fleming in September 1928. Two years later, it was used for the first time to cure an infection – on November 25, 1930, British Doctor Cecil George Paine used penicillin to help an infant suffering from neonatal conjunctivitis.

The word "dude" means "man" and, nowadays, is generically applicable to any person. (But you already knew that.) The term has been around since the late 1880s, but unlike most words, the etymology of the term was, until recently, mostly a mystery.
