Un soir d’hiver, un corps est retrouvé dans les canaux de Venise. La victime, un ouvrier travaillant pour le palazzo Zaffo dei Leoni, semblait en apparence sans histoire. Mais la veille de sa disparition, lui et Brunetti avaient eu une discussion compromettante sur la future gérance du palais, bijou patrimonial de Venise. En menant l’enquête, le commissaire découvre avec stupeur que le défunt avait une fascination malsaine pour les années de plomb en Italie.

Dans la belle Venise, les activités criminelles semblent se calmer tandis que la ville sort de la pandémie. Le commissaire Brunetti profite de ce moment pour renouer avec la splendeur de la Sérénissime et sa riche culture. Cependant, la trêve prend fin quand une amie d’enfance de Brunetti arrive en catastrophe à la questure. Elle soupçonne son gendre d’être mêlé à des affaires sordides, et de mettre ainsi toute sa famille en danger. Brunetti va mener l’enquête en secret, aidé de la signorina Elettra et de la commissaire Claudia Griffoni, au risque de désobéir à sa hiérarchie.

On vient de retrouver le corps du jeune Ernesto Moro, mort par pendaison dans la salle de douches de l'Académie militaire de Venise, dont il était élève. Le commissaire Guido Brunetti est particulièrement touché par l'affaire, car il est père d'un jeune adolescent. Officiellement, le jeune Ernesto s'est suicidé, mais Brunetti a du mal à croire à cette version officielle. Car il règne une atmosphère trouble dans cette Académie réservée aux enfants de la grande bourgeoisie et de l'aristocratie vénitiennes.

Le commissaire Brunetti reçoit un jour la visite de Claudia Leonardo, une étudiante élève de sa femme. La requête de la jeune fille l'intrigue : elle veut savoir si son grand-père, qui a commis un crime pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, peut être réhabilité après sa mort. Mais elle reste évasive quant à la nature de ce crime. Brunetti mène l'enquête et apprend qu'il pourrait bien s'agir d'un trafic d'œuvres d'art. Lorsque Claudia est retrouvée poignardée dans son appartement, les choses se compliquent.

Deux pêcheurs de palourdes sont retrouvés noyés dans les débris de leur bateau, leurs corps lardés de coups de couteau. Le commissaire Brunetti doit mener l'enquête au sein d'une communauté unie par un code de loyauté et une méfiance instinctive vis-à-vis des étrangers. Loin du monde raffiné de la Sérénissime, dans cette ambiance digne d'un village sicilien, la loi du silence est de mise. Pour tromper la méfiance des insulaires, Brunetti a l'idée d'envoyer sur place sa secrétaire, la signora Elettra.

Sie erzählt uns von ihrer Jugend auf der Farm und von Sperrstunden-Pyjamapartys im Iran, Geldnot und einem Fiat 600. Davon, wie sie als "Anstandsdame" nach Italien kam, von der Jagd nach dem perfekten Cappuccino und kleinen Wundern in den Bergen.

Personne n'aime être dérangé en pleine lecture de l'Annabase un samedi après-midi par un coup de sonnette intempestif. Surtout pas le commissaire Guido Brunetti, fin lettré et flic épicurien, et surtout pas pour une sombre affaire de permis de construire introuvable concernant son propre appartement... Simple formalité ? Pas sûr. D'autant que le fonctionnaire zélé tombe malencontreusement d'un échafaudage où il n'avait rien à faire, devant des témoins qui à leur tour décèdent brutalement.

Le commissaire Guido Brunetti est sur la sellette : sa propre femme, Paola, est arrêtée après avoir démoli la vitrine d'une agence de voyages qu'elle suspecte de promouvoir le tourisme sexuel. Brunetti est temporairement démis de ses fonctions. Mais l'affaire se corse avec l'assassinat du propriétaire de l'agence. Pour tout indice, on retrouve à côté du corps une lettre accusant le défunt d'être un "pornographe". L'enquête s'annonce délicate, pour la carrière comme pour la vie privée de Guido Brunetti...

La septième enquête du commissaire Brunetti. Dans un champ en friche de la campagne vénitienne, on découvre un cadavre décomposé. Seule sa chevalière permet de l'identifier : il s'agit de Roberto Lorenzoni, fils d'une des plus grandes familles de Venise, kidnappé deux ans plus tôt et jamais retrouvé.
