A damaged survivor of the First World War, Tom Birkin finds refuge in the quiet village church of Oxgodby where he is to spend the summer uncovering a huge medieval wall-painting. Immersed in the peace and beauty of the countryside and the unchanging rhythms of village life he experiences a sense of renewal and belief in the future. Now an old man, Birkin looks back on the idyllic summer of 1920, remembering a vanished place of blissful calm, untouched by change, a precious moment he has carried with him through the disappointments of the years.

Ein kleines Dorf in Yorkshire: Alex Slingsby ist Ex-Fußballprofi, Grundschullehrer - und ein Mann mit Ambitionen. Gemeinsam mit dem Schuldirektor und dem Platzwart nimmt er sich des amateurhaften örtlichen Fußballteams an. Und nach und nach formiert sich aus einem Haufen von Einzelgängern eine richtige Mannschaft. Mit dabei sind der Milchmann, ein leicht depressiver Stürmerstar und der Pfarrer des Ortes. Yorkshire im Sommer 1920: Der Restaurator Tom Birkin steigt im idyllischen Oxgodby aus dem Zug. Traumatisiert von seinen Erlebnissen im Ersten Weltkrieg wurde er von seiner Ehefrau verlassen. Nun soll er das mittelalterliche Wandgemälde in der örtlichen Kirche freilegen und hofft, in der Ruhe Yorkshires seinen Frieden zu finden. Und tatsächlich: Je näher er dem Meisterwerk hinter dem Putz kommt, desto näher kommt er auch sich selbst.
