Sonea is caught up in a confrontation between the hated Guild magicians and the angry youth of the slums. To her dismay, she discovers that she possesses the same powers as the reviled magicians. To avoid capture, she must seek protection from the city's feared underworld, The Thieves. In return, she must use her powers for them, but her magic never seems to do quite what she intends it to.

Sonea knows the other novices in the Magicians' Guild all come from powerful families, but she also knows she can turn to Rothen and Dannyl for help when she needs it. Promoted to Guild Ambassador, Lord Dannyl leaves for the Elyne court. His first order from Administrator Lorlen is to resume, in secret, High Lord Akkarin's long-abandoned research into ancient magical knowledge. Not knowing the true reason for his journey, Dannyl is soon facing unexpected dangers.

Relieved that Lorkin is coming home, Sonea prepares to meet with the traitors on behalf of the Guild. Then bad news arrives: The Sachakan king has imprisoned her son.

As the Sachakan king tries to force Lorkin into betraying the traitors, Dannyl questions his friendship with Ashaki Achati. Can he trust the Sachakan? Not at all, if Tayend is right. But do Tayend’s suspicions spring from good political instincts, or jealousy? Easily evading capture by the Guild, the Rogue knows only one obstacle lies between him and his ambition to rule the underworld: Cery.

Living among the Sachakan rebels, Lorkin does his best to learn about them and their unique magic. But the Traitors are reluctant to trade their knowledge for the Healing they so desperately want, and while he assumes they fear revealing their existence to the world, there are hints they have bigger plans. Sonea searches for the rogue, knowing that Cery cannot avoid assassination forever, but the rouge's influence over the city's underworld is far greater than she feared. His only weakness is the loss of his mother, now locked away in the Lookout.

Life should have been easier for Sonea, now that Regin ignored her and the rest of the novices treated her with wary respect, but she cannot forget what she witnessed in Akkarin's underground room, or his warning that Kyralia's ancient enemy is watching the Guild closely.

When word comes that Lorkin has gone missing Sonea is desperate to find him, but if she leaves the city she will be exiled forever, and besides, her old friend Cery needs her help.

Lorkin est de retour au Sachaka avec les Traîtresses rebelles, en mission pour leur reine : sur lui pèse la lourde tâche de poser les bases d'une alliance entre leurs deux peuples. Quel que soit son choix, celui-ci entraînera un immense sacrifice, et pourrait bien transformer la Guilde des magiciens à jamais.

Lorkin vit désormais au Sanctuaire, où il essaie de comprendre la société des Traîtresses et le fonctionnement de leur magie unique car il les soupçonne de nourrir de sombres ambitions. De son côté, Sonea continue de chercher le renégat Skellin. Mais l'influence de ce dernier est bien plus étendue qu'elle ne le craignait. Au Sachaka, Dannyl a perdu le respect de l'élite locale et est préoccupé par l'arrivée du nouvel ambassadeur - un homme qu'il ne connaît que trop bien.

Il n'est pas toujours facile de suivre les traces de son père... Le jeune Lorkin, fils du haut seigneur Akkarin, en fait l'apprentissage. Bien déterminé à se montrer à la hauteur de son héritage héroïque, il se porte volontaire pour servir d'assistant au nouvel ambassadeur de la Guilde au Sachaka. Mais il ne tarde pas à être confronté à de sérieux ennuis.

- Peut-on étudier la magie et exercer le métier de guérisseur ? - Bien entendu. La plupart des mages ont des passions personnelles et des projets bien à eux. Mais pour l'instant, ta priorité est d'apprendre à contrôler ton pouvoir. C'est ce que l'on appelle le "prix de la magie". Si tu ne réussis pas, ton don finira par te tuer. Considérant la force de ton pouvoir, je doute que les ravages se limitent à une seule pièce.

Sonea a gagné sa place au sein de la Guilde des magiciens et les autres novices la traitent désormais avec respect. Mais elle ne peut oublier ce dont elle fut témoin dans la chambre souterraine du haut seigneur Akkarin, ni la menace que fait peser sur la Guilde un ancien ennemi. Or, à mesure qu'Akkarin lui dévoile peu à peu son savoir, Sonea ne sait plus à qui se fier. La vérité est-elle aussi terrifiante que le prétend le haut seigneur ? Ou essaie-t-il de la tromper afin qu'elle mette ses pouvoirs au service de ses sinistres projets ?

Tous les novices de la Guilde des magiciens viennent de familles puissantes... sauf Sonea. Mais elle sait bien qu'elle peut se tourner vers ses maîtres Dannyl et Rothen pour leur demander de l'aide. En tout cas, jusqu'à ce que d'infâmes rumeurs commencent à courir sur elle - et qu'Akkarin, le haut seigneur, intervienne.

"Cette jeune fille est plus puissante que la moyenne de nos élèves, peut-être même plus que nos mages ! Elle est un danger. Il faut la trouver et l'arrêter. Si c'est une renégate, la loi nous oblige à l'amener devant le roi. Sinon, nous sommes tenus de lui enseigner le Contrôle. C'est encore une enfant, probablement une voleuse! Mais elle pourrait devenir une grande magicienne...".
