The land of OZ is the happiest fairyland anywhere, but there are evil creatures whose only ambition is to destroy that happiness. "The Dancing Girls, and Other Stories" contains four short-stories by two-times Pulitzer Prize winner Edna Ferber, written between 1910 and 1919. The title story paints a pictures of small-town America and of life "on the other side of the tracks." "The Dancing Girls" is followed by "Old Lady Mandle," "Long Distance," and "One Hundred Percent." - Edna Ferber (1885-1968) was an American author.

These are three imaginative science fiction stories by an author I admire a lot, William Tenn. "Venus is a Man's World", ("Galaxy Science Fiction", July 1951), "Project Hush" ("Galaxy Science Fiction", 1954) and "Of All Possible Worlds" ("Galaxy", Sept 1956).

3 Science Fiction stories by the great Gerald Vance: "Monsoons of Death" is a very nice blend of horror story and a study of true bravery on the planet Mars. Nowlan’s novella tells about the United States in the 25th century, conquered by Hans in 2109 AD and only now beginning to rebel. Sometime after World War I, nearly all the European powers joined forces against the United States. Although the US won the war, both sides were devastated by the conflict. Taking advantage of the chaos that followed, the "Russian Soviets" (Soviet Union) joined forces with the "Mongolians" to take over Europe.

"The Willows" is a novella by English author Algernon Blackwood, originally published as part of his 1907 collection The Listener and Other Stories. It is one of Blackwood's best known works and has been influential on a number of later writers. Horror author H.P. Lovecraft considered it to be the finest supernatural tale in English literature. "The Willows" is an example of early modern horror and is connected within the literary tradition of weird fiction.

"Beyond the Black River" is one of the original short stories about Conan the Cimmerian, written by American author Robert E. Howard. It's set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and concerns Conan's battle against a savage tribe of Picts in the unsettled lands beyond the infamous Black River.

The Call of the Wild is a short adventure novel by Jack London, published in 1903 and set in Yukon, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, when strong sled dogs were in high demand.

"Herbert West -Reanimator" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written between October 1921 and June 1922. It was first serialized in February through July 1922 in the amateur publication Home Brew. The story is the first to mention Lovecraft's fictional Miskatonic University. It is also one of the first depictions of zombies as scientifically reanimated corpses, with animalistic and uncontrollable temperaments.

This delightful little tale by Hans Christian Andersen follows the ridiculous path a rumor takes as it travels from hen coop to hen coop, spreading the scandalous tale of a whole barnyard of hens who in pluck out all their feathers to impress the cock. Indeed, There Is No Doubt about It! Scandalous!!

A researcher goes on an expedition to find "The Tablets of the Gods" which have plagued his dreams since his boyhood. He finds them, and the horrible truth of humanity's true purpose in the universe. This story, The Man Who Found Out is an example to me of pure cosmic horror in that the horror comes totally from knowledge which is (in-story) so terrible that it forever blights the minds of anyone who discovers it.

The Brave Tin Soldier, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier is a classic Andersen tale about a toy soldier with only one leg. His love of the aloof ballerina leads into many adventures where his bravery is tested severely but he always remains brave and steadfast.

The full title of Swift's pamphlet is A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People from Being a Burtden to their Parents, or the Country, and for Making them Beneficial to the Publick."The tract is an ironically conceived attempt to "find out a fair, cheap, and easy Method" for converting the starving children of Ireland into "sound and useful members of the Commonwealth." Across the country poor children, predominantly Catholics, are living in squalor because their families are too poor to keep them fed and clothed.
