Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada is an engrossing blend of scientific exploration and personal adventure. Clarence King describes the ascent of Mounts Tyndall, Shasta, and Whitney with a scientific poet’s eye, and makes the grandeur of the cliffs, the peaks, the glaciers, and the meadows of Yosemite Valley come alive through his remarkable gifts of portrayal. King describes nature like a master painter while his portrait of the people of California 20 years after the Gold Rush finds engaging expression in a subtle shift of style.

The chronicle of Theodore Adolphus “Dot” Babb is a factual and fascinating account of his and his younger sister’s 1865 capture by a Comanche band near what is today Decatur, Texas. They were taken to an area in what became the state of Oklahoma and adopted into the tribe, where Babb observed all facets of the tribe’s customs and participated in activities like horse taming, until both children were ransomed by their father in 1867. Babb kept in contact with the tribe and the next decade the family lived with the Comanche for a year before settling in Wichita Falls.

Philpot notes how remarkable it is that God never truly uses logical argument in the Scriptures of truth. But why? Because arguing in the scriptures would be unbecoming of a Sovereign.

Love, grace, beauty - these are all the works of God. Humanity itself beats in unison not only physically but spiritually as well. It is these things that bind us together even when we are different.

There are many unfulfilled prophecies in the Christian religion. But, like all prophecies, they are obscured until the time comes for them to be fulfilled. Philpot addresses the naysayers by asserting that they, too, will see the prophecies unfold as they become reality.

Education, Philpot feels, is something that has fought its way into general acceptance in the population. He notes that ignorance has lost its supporters and that education in spirituality is on the rise.

Although most priests say evil is the greatest thing to fear, Philpot asserts that there are actually two things: evil and error. In this sermon, he demonstrates how error is just as sinful as evil.

Miss Martha’s corner bakery receives a mysterious visitor buying two loaves of stale bread every day. When her sympathetic heart finally pushes her to an act of kindness, her romantic daydreams are brutally crushed by a rather uninspired reality.

Preached at the Providence Chapel in London on July 11, 1847, Philpot offered his perspective on God’s observations and his work. Our world as well as God’s communications to us have always come from an interchange between light and dark. God watches over us and sees where he needs to build, and where he needs to destroy.

Preached at the Zoar Chapel in London on August 9, 1846, Philpot reflected on the exchange and communication between God and man. The only true exchange, he states, can come from a recognition of our sinful ways. In doing so, we can receive God’s teachings, bear its fruits, and keep our word in constant devotion.
