An iconic figure of the nineties Brit Pop scene, Meg Mathews is a former music industry PR, event planner and designer turned entrepreneur, author and advocate for the menopause. Born in Guernsey, UK on 14th March 1966, to builder, Stanley Mathews and secretary, Christine Mathews, Meg emigrated to South Africa at the age of nine. She returned to the UK three years later, attending Oxford Sibford Private School until she was fifteen, before moving to London. Her early aspirations were to be a veterinary nurse, and she achieved the required qualifications to move into this line of work. And yet, Meg’s early life and career was shaped by the London music scene, finding her way into music management, culminating in her work at Creation Records. In 1997, she married musician, Noel Gallagher, giving birth to their daughter, Anais Gallagher at Portland Hospital in 2000. Named after Meg’s favourite author, Anias Nin, Anias now works as a model and influencer. Meg and Noel divorced in 2001. From the music industry, Meg went on to work successfully as a designer, having designed both scarves and wallpaper for luxury department store, Liberty London. Her first interior design client was Victoria Beckham, and her love of both fashion and interior design continues to this day. However, Meg’s true work arguably began in 2016. After turning 50, she began to experience menopausal symptoms and was shocked at the lack of support made available for women at this time in their lives. From here, she made it her mission to change attitudes, break stigmas and help women feel empowered around all-things menopause. Following the successful launch of MegsMenopause, a space dedicated to frank and open discussions around the subject, in 2018, Meg launched a range of menopause products, focused on intimate care, skin care and nutrition. Her first book, The New Hot: Taking on the Menopause with Attitude and Style, was published in 2020, and has become a sell-out success. She continues her work as a spokesperson on the subject, appearing on international TV shows and leading talks at organisations such as Foreign & Commonwealth Office, BBC, and John Lewis and Partners. Having used her own menopause as a time to reassess and reset, Meg’s message surrounding it is one of reinvention. Encouraging women to embrace this new chapter of their lives, her goal is to educate and inspire, whilst breaking taboos with the support of medical professionals, and offer tips to help women take control of their lives. Meg is also an online columnist for Red magazine and was named by the publication as one of their top 20 Career Shifters in 2017. In 2018, she was presented with the Inspiring Public Figure of the year award by the Inspirational Leadership Trust. Alongside her work on the menopause, Meg is passionate about animals. From rescuing a dog on the streets of Camden in 1997 to becoming an ambassador for Pup Aid, Meg continues to use her platform to speak out an active campaigner for animal rights and supports a number of animal charities. In 2004, she lobbied for Anti Fox Hunting, and in 2020 played a key role in getting Lucy’s Law passed, banning all third-party puppy sales in England. Her vital work on both the menopause and animal rights continues.
