Nebraska är en lugn plats i jämförelse med det stimmiga Chicago. Men här har Anna lyckats hitta något slags stabilitet som hon skulle kunna tänka sig att kalla för hem. En bekant skvallrar om att han troligtvis vet var Nils befinner sig, men det finns inga självklarheter. Anna känner dock att lyckan, ja, hoppet spirar inom henne vid tanken på att Nils finns här, och att han fortfarande lever. Men när ett spöke ur hennes förflutna plötsligt letar upp henne blir den lilla staden plötsligt en mörk och ogästvänlig plats ... Ingrid Kampås är en svensk författare.

Anna är en ung kvinna som sliter hårt i Sverige. Året är 1882. Omständigheterna är tuffa. Men det finns ett hopp. På andra sidan havet finns ett land som erbjuder alla möjligheter. Till och med för en fattig kvinna som Anna. Hon och hennes bästa väninna Emilia beslutar sig för att ta steget. De lämnar sin lilla stad en tidig morgon och ger sig ut på en lång resa till hamnen där båten väntar på att ta dem till Amerika ... Ingrid Kampås är en svensk författare. New York är en myllrande plats i slutet av 1800-talet. Anna slits in i tumultet och försöker finna fotfäste. En liten pojke har kommit bort sin familj, och hon hjälper honom att hitta rätt. Chicago är inte platsen för Anna. Efter ett våldtäktsförsök av husets elaka son tar hon tåget till Nebraska där en bekant bor med familj. Den lilla staden är väldigt annorlunda från det stora, brusande Chicago. Men det finns också mycket här som Anna gillar. Flera hus verkar komma direkt från Sverige och folket är väldigt trevligt. Hon trivs också tillsammans med sin nya värdfamilj. Hon tänker fortfarande ofta på Nils, mannen som hon träffade på båten och som hon tappade bort vid landstigningen. Vad gör han nu? Lever han fortfarande? Hon känner att det värker i hjärtat av att tänka på honom.

Maria är ute och reser i Peru. Kvällarna är kvalmiga och dagarna är fruktansvärt varma, men det är i alla fall att föredra framför det bistra klimatet hemma i Sverige. Men hettan är snart det minsta av hennes bekymmer. Maria börjar misstänka att allt inte står rätt till i den lilla byn, och viskningarna om kriminalitet bakom kulisserna blir all fler. Och det värsta av allt‚ det verkar som ett barnhem för utsatta barn är i centrum av härvan. Maria vet inte vem hon kan lita på i detta främmande land men hon måste göra något och det fort, innan fler oskyldiga drabbas.

Ett mord skakar en liten halländsk by. Distriktssköterskan Mari har nog med att vara ensamstående mamma och jaga på fritiden. Men när hon besöker den rullstolsburna patienten Vera möter hon en brutal syn. Mot sin vilja dras hon in i en räcka händelser som leder henne att söka långt bak i det förflutna. I byn råder stark social kontroll, men under ytan bär många av invånarna på hemligheter. Och mördaren låter sig inte nöja med ett offer.
